DOWNSVIEW BATHROOM
Location: Toronto (North York), ON
Scope: Bathroom Design, Conceptual Design Services
Focus: Layout optimization, material direction, visual openness
Challenge
The existing bathroom was a typical builder-grade space, with standard fixture placement and little consideration for how the room should feel to use on a daily basis. While functional, it lacked hierarchy, flow, and a sense of intentionality.
Working within a compact footprint added another layer of complexity — every decision needed to carry weight. The challenge was not just to improve aesthetics, but to reimagine the space in a way that felt open, balanced, and aligned with how it would be experienced day to day.
Approach
The design began by simplifying the layout and removing default assumptions. A key decision was to deprioritize the bathtub, allowing the plan to be restructured around what mattered most — clarity of movement, visual order, and a more generous shower experience.
Plumbing fixtures were consolidated along a single wall to create a cohesive line, reducing visual fragmentation and improving usability. A built-out wall was introduced to conceal plumbing while forming an integrated ledge for everyday essentials — embedding function directly into the architecture of the space.
The vanity was reimagined as a floating element to maintain visual openness and allow the floor plane to remain uninterrupted. Softening the composition, a curved mirror was introduced to balance the otherwise linear geometry, adding a more human-centred quality.
Material selection was intentionally restrained. The palette pairs deep green glossy tile within the shower — adding depth and reflectivity — with surrounding matte finishes that ground the space. Warm wood introduces an organic layer, while brushed fixtures maintain consistency without visual harshness.
Outcome
The result is a bathroom that feels calm, grounded, and intuitively organized despite its compact size.
By simplifying the layout, aligning key elements, and reducing visual noise, the space reads as more open and balanced than its footprint suggests. Integrated storage and thoughtful architectural moves eliminate the need for add-ons, allowing the design to feel cohesive and resolved.
Rooted in biophilic principles, the material palette connects the space to natural tones and textures without relying on decoration. Clear sightlines, reduced clutter, and a balanced composition support a more comfortable, effortless experience.
What was once a purely functional room becomes a space that feels considered, restorative, and aligned with daily life.
