ELMWOOD KITCHEN

Location: Toronto, ON

Scope: Kitchen Design, Conceptual Design Services

Focus: Layout and functional optimization, material direction

This conceptual kitchen design was developed to explore how a classic aesthetic can be reinterpreted through a more structured and intentional layout.

Challenge

The client’s wishlist included a wide range of functional requirements — pantry storage, appliance garage, beverage centre, banquette seating, and seating for four — while maintaining a clean, cohesive look rooted in classic design principles.

A key constraint was the desire for a “clean island” without a sink, which, combined with circulation needs, made the original island configuration feel crowded and less efficient.

Approach

To improve flow and better support the program, the island was reconfigured into a peninsula. This allowed for generous seating while maintaining clear movement through the space and establishing a more continuous visual line.

The layout was organized around a central cooking zone, with a custom hood acting as the primary focal point. Storage was carefully integrated throughout, including a dedicated pantry, concealed appliance garage, garbage pull-out, and specialized storage for spices and utensils.

A beverage centre was designed as a hutch-style feature, adding both function and a moment of visual interest. Banquette seating was introduced to create a more relaxed, anchored dining area.

Material selections were guided by a restrained, classic palette — warm whites, medium wood tones, and soft grey-green accents — paired with subtle detailing such as beveled shaker cabinetry and refined hardware.

Outcome

The result is a kitchen that balances traditional character with modern functionality. The revised layout improves circulation and usability, while the clear hierarchy of elements creates a sense of visual calm.

The space supports a range of everyday activities — from cooking and gathering to casual dining — without compromising clarity or cohesion.

This project was developed as a conceptual design study.
