POWDER ROOM WITH DRAMA

Location: Toronto (North York), ON

Scope: Bathroom Design, Conceptual Design Services

Focus: Material contrast, layered lighting, and creating a refined, immersive experience within a compact space

Challenge

The client approached this powder room remodel with a clear intention: to create a space that feels modern, refined, and slightly unexpected — introducing a sense of drama within a compact footprint.

The challenge was to balance bold, expressive elements with restraint, ensuring the space felt elevated rather than overwhelming, and cohesive despite the layering of materials and textures.

Approach

The design was anchored by a custom floating vanity, introducing both visual lightness and a strong architectural presence. The combination of warm wood and a thick, dark countertop establishes contrast while maintaining a clean, minimal profile.

To create a focal point, a round mirror was introduced — softening the linear geometry of the space and drawing attention upon entry. This gesture is reinforced through layered lighting, including a sculptural pendant and integrated LED illumination behind the mirror and beneath the vanity. These elements work together to enhance depth and create a more atmospheric experience.

Material selection was used to define zones within the small footprint. White oak slats add warmth and vertical rhythm, grounding the space with a natural texture. Terrazzo-inspired flooring introduces subtle variation and movement, while concrete-look tiles around the vanity and toilet provide a quieter, more architectural backdrop.

Natural elements were incorporated sparingly to soften the composition. A simple arrangement of greenery introduces a biophilic layer, adding freshness without competing with the material palette.

Outcome

The result is a powder room that feels both striking and composed.

Through the interplay of contrast, texture, and light, the space achieves a sense of depth and visual interest without excess. Carefully integrated lighting expands the perception of the room, while the floating vanity and restrained palette maintain clarity and openness.

What emerges is a compact space with a strong identity — modern, grounded, and quietly dramatic — designed to leave a lasting impression while remaining effortless in its use.
